Our latest excitement in the Gunnison Valley was the two days that the USA Pro Cycling Tour passed through. On Tuesday, the bikers departed Salida, headed over Monarch Pass, rode through Gunnison, went down Elk Avenue in town and up to Mt. Crested Butte -- totaling 99 miles and over 8,000 feet climbed.
Since the route in Gunnison was just a few blocks from Mark's office, he stepped out to watch as the peloton rounded the corner from Hwy 50 onto Main Street.
Isn't that one of the biggest American flags you've ever seen???
I opted to view the race from our deck as the riders passed CB South on Hwy 135.
Not nearly the close-up view as others had, but Gulliver may have had the best seat in the house snoozing quietly in his crib. It would have been an almost all-day affair to get into town before the road closures and hang out and wait for the riders to arrive (which turned out to be almost an hour and a half later than anticipated). I just don't enjoy being "stuck" with a toddler, and that's what it would have been like since there were periods you literally could not get out of town because the only road in and out of town was closed. But there were loads of people who were there to cheer on the riders as they pushed and pushed to complete the only uphill finish of the 7-day race.
On Wednesday morning, Gulliver and I headed to Gunnison to watch the start of the Queen Stage -- the longest, hardest, and highest day of the race -- from Gunnison to Aspen. We got there early enough to stake out good viewing spots close to the start.
Dad joined us about 15 minutes before the race started and took some more good pics as the riders passed right by us....
Gulliver was most interested in the helicopter flying overhead...
It was an exciting two days in the valley. Lots of hard work by many people to pull off this first-time race, but it was a huge success!
Now back to golf...
Oh, you can view the final stage of the race on NBC this Sunday (Aug 28) from noon - 2:00pm (mountain time). At the start of the show, there is sure to be a re-cap of the race which will include fabulous scenes from the 2 days of racing in Crested Butte and Gunnison. Check it out!!!
