Weekend in Denver

Last weekend we headed to Denver for a weekend of big city fun. I always like to start our road trip posts off with a picture of Gulliver in the car… he's just so sweet sleeping in the car seat.

We arrived late in the afternoon on Friday and checked into our hotel downtown. It didn't take long at all for Gulliver to get comfortable playing trucks on the bed.

We adopted one of the resident gold fishes for the weekend. Gulliver named him "Goldfishyfishy."

Once settled in, we ventured out for Gulliver's first real look at downtown Denver. It certainly has a different vibe than downtown Crested Butte!

We rode the free shuttle bus for a few blocks and then walked the rest of the way to Coors Field for a Rockies game (they played the Arizona Diamondbacks and got slaughtered 15 - 5).

At the game, we enjoyed hot dogs and peanuts. Sure was fun dropping the peanut shells all over the ground.

Gulliver liked bouncing around from seat to seat. We were in the first row (of a very high section) so it was easy to move around without bugging anyone. All in all, it was a good first baseball experience.

We walked back to the hotel after the game and got ready for night night since we had a big day planned on Saturday.

Saturday started off in Golden with "A Day Out With Thomas." What a nice event! We rode Thomas the Train, played with trains in the Imagination Station, climbed on old steam engines, and visited the petting zoo. There were lots of other activities, too, like storytime, magic shows, and Sir Topham Hat, but we couldn't possibly do everything so we stuck to the things Gulliver liked best.

That afternoon, we headed to the Denver Zoo. I wasn't sure how it would compare to the St. Louis Zoo, but it was fantastic. So many different animals, a new Elephant exhibit, and convenient parking. I was quite impressed. Gulliver was as interested in wandering around and climbing on things as he was in looking at the animals. By the end of the afternoon, he was tuckered out. I just love the zoo. You can't go often enough in my book.

We had dinner at Chili's and watched the start of the OU game. Then headed back to the hotel to chill for the night. We just love the Hotel Monaco. Mark and I stayed there for our second wedding anniversary. They are super dog-friendly -- the girls have treats waiting for them upon arrival in nice shiny, silver bowls. Most importantly, though, we don't have to worry about leaving them in the room alone. They have a sign we can post on the door when we leave to alert the staff that the dogs are in the room unattended. The front desk has our phone number and will call us if they are making noise, which has never been a problem.

Apparently Gulliver is as fond of the Hotel Monaco as Mark and I. He loved the downtime in the hotel… playing trucks, reading books, jumping on the bed (after repeatedly being told not to, of course), and playing peek-a-boo from the sliding bathroom door.

He didn't settle down quickly either night, but once he fell asleep -- he slept hard.  Every time we left or came back to the room,  he ran all the way down the length of the hallway, grinning from ear to ear.

He loved riding the elevator and seeing different dogs coming and going.

He would pet and "milk" the giant cow every time we passed it in the elevator lobby.

We packed up Sunday morning, picked up our favorite breakfast burritos, and stopped by for a quick breakfast at my dear friend Dana's house. The last time we saw them was 2 years ago… my how the boys have grown during that time! They had fun jumping on the trampoline, running around the yard, and blowing lots of bubbles. It was good to burn some energy before getting in the car for the 4+ hour ride home.

When we finally got on the road, Gulliver announced, "No go home. Go a Hotel Monaco." And when he awoke the next morning, the first words out of his mouth were "Go a Denver." Guess it's safe to say he enjoyed our weekend getaway!
